How to add an Icon (favicon.ico) next to your URL
Adding a icon to your website that will show up next to your URL is actually a very easy task. First off you need an icon my favorite place to do this is at www.favicon.cc. At Favicon you can either select from one of there many icon's they have or you can make your own. They have a really neat picture to icon generator that takes all the work out of making a icon all you have to do is find a nice image and convert it automatically.
Now that you have your favicon.ico you will need to copy this file to the joomla directly holding your sites template. You can do this by using your hosts file manager or with a FTP Client FileZilla is my favorite. Then copy the file into .../<joomla-root-location>/template/<your-template>/. Where <joomla-root-location> is the location Joomla was installed and <your-template> is the name of your default template.
